Hey guys, did you know that blocking backlinks using Google Disavow will result in a drop in organic traffic! And also did you know that this will have a negative impact on the search results?

That's if you have no idea on what you are doing!

I run a test and this really did have a negative impact on my search rankings.

My advice is just to leave everything as it is, in my opinion google use of artificial intelligence has learned how to bypass all toxic backlinks as the years went on.

I would advise bloggers and web developer users just to concentrate on content, and optimizing your niche.

What was the outcome after I have used Google Disavow?

In my point of view, disavowing any domains backlinks could have a crazy impact on your search rankings and doing this incorrectly will result in instantaneous huge search engine traffic/rank drops.

And yes! This mistake could also take months to recover. Well it did for me back in 2021 when I tried out this tool.

There are many webmasters and admins who have decided they will disavow their own toxic backlinks only to find out that they have destroyed their organic Google traffic. So at least I wasn't the only one.

Anyway I was not very proud to run such a test on a growing blog, to be honest I blocked out highly toxic backlinks from adult industry, gambling with toxic rank of 80% and above. But it seems that these backlink have high domain authority, even though these backlinks are toxic. In my point of view I thought that these backlinks will simply have 0 impact on your ranks, and even improve the ranks once disavowed inside google, well at least i though.

I was wrong!

I have seen many blogs and forums, saying that do not touch disavow tools, just let google do its job. But I wanted to be smart, looking back at 2021, I made a huge mistake when I used this tool.

Check out my search result traffic after I disowned around 50 domains.

Google Disavow drop in Oragnic Search by 70%As you can see above disavowing the toxic backlinks had a negative impact on the search engines instead of the positive SEO and ranking impact!

My results

  • On December 15th, 2021 there were 657 google clicks in 1 day.
  • On Friday 8th January there were only 225 clicks.
  • This is a decline of more than 70% in google traffic.

What caused the decline?

  • Disavowing any toxic backlinks without proper research.
  • Remember that not all toxic backlinks are toxic.
  • Disavowing changes every couple of days.
  • Not keeping track of domains and search traffic changes.

If you have been hit with a traffic incline right after disavowing domains then this means that you have done something wrong!

But please do not panic!

You have the power to fix this! This is what I did to fix the issue, check out my steps below.

I simply went to google disavow and removed the submitted disavow list of domains, to revert everything back to the way it was. Then using SEMrush I only disavowed red flagged domains with extremely high domain toxic authority.

I must warn you, if you have no idea what you are doing, you will mess up your ranks, I had to learn the hard way, now when it comes to blogging, I just let google do its job with allowing all backlink. As in 2025 and onwards, these pretty much have no impact on search results.

If you do decide to remove toxic backlinks, I will pray for you! And I hope you know what you are doing!

My results!

After 3 months of disavowing 10/15 links at a time every 2/3 weeks, you should see some positive results. Well at least I did, but I only removed RED flagged toxic backlinks inside SEMrush.

google disavow positive results

Remember that disavowing the wrong backlinks will cause a huge dip in traffic, so always make sure you start off with the RED-colored toxic domains on SEMrush first.

Doing this will have positive impact, well only if you remove the red flagged toxic backlinks with high toxicity.

Then you can move down to amber-coloured toxic backlinks, but I would not recommend doing this if your unsure what your doing, please do not touch the green backlinks on SEMrush.

If you're unsure what you're doing, then our advice would be that you hire an SEO agency to take care of and audit your toxic backlinks.

This is my experience in using google disavow tools, definitely use this with caution. And my advice only disavow red colour flagged backlinks.

I don't recommend this, but if you do want to disavow backlinks, you can use free SEO tools like SEMrush, which has backlinks toxicity export feature for disavow.
