Hey guys, I just wanted to write a topic on why page speed matters when it comes to SEO, not only SEO but also providing user a great experience.
Google has previously announced that starting in July 2018, a new algorithm will be used in determining the ranking of search that is designed especially for results of mobile searches. This algorithm will be based on page speed.
Update: in 2025 this feature is still active and has been ever since 2018, this is because fast websites simply provide good user experience, and also improving rankings of websites, naturally.
What is website page speed?
Basically, page speed is measured by the speed and time the content of your page takes to fully load and paint for the end user. Or, it can be measured by the speed it takes your site to receive the first byte of information from the web service.
The ideal time for a page to be fully loaded is 3 seconds, website loading faster than this provide great user experience and rank a lot better.
If your website takes 5 to 10 seconds to load, you will need to look into improving this, as it provides bad user experience.
How will page speed affect your SEO ranking?
Basically, since you do not want to ruin the first impressions users have when clicking on your site, then you should realize that everything starts with page speed.
This is something I never took into considering until I was into 2 years of blogging, good user experience comes first before anything.
I see the lot of blogs adding 10+ ads on single blog topic, I think this is just too much, their revenue might be higher, but image the end user trying to read the blog post will most likely not comes back, this is what I have realized over the years, that's why I limit these to just 4/5 of personal adjusted ads on my pages, and allow Google to add extra as it requires with auto ads.
Most of my blogs have around 5/6 ads on each page, this provides faster loading time and better user experience than websites which use 10 and more ads.
Also makes my visitors comes back the next day.
Websites which use 10–20 ads per page, from personal opinion, I think that's just too much. Unless their blog topic contains more than 3000 words. Then it would make sense.
Also keep in mind that having many ads will slow down the website loading time and provide bad user experience, but good news is that you can also adjust these with delay JavaScript execution, check this out if you have issues with ads slowing does your blog or website.
What may slow down your website? This is a list from my experience.
- Badly optimized images.
- Large images.
- Too many scripts running at once, like JavaScript's.
- Badly optimized website.
- Website issues which cause website to load slowly.
- Slow or cheap shared website hosting.
- Badly designed website.
- Not using cache plugins like GZIP or server based cache.
- Not compressing CSS and JavaScript.
- Too many images and videos on a single blog post.
I would recommend anyone to go through each of these bullet points which I have outlined, and make sure that you can say, yes, this issue does not affect me, if you can say that then you should be on the correct path.
I hope this information will help all bloggers and website developers.
This is something I have learned over 10 years of blogging and developing websites.
Good luck with your online blog or niche goals! And good luck on speeding up your website!
