There has been a huge question by website developers and that is “Are Toxic Backlinks Ignored by Google in 2022?

Over the years Google has undergone huge AI server updates when it comes to search rankings and backlink density.

Back in the days when we had the Panda update going back to 2014/2016, we have seen huge shifts in rankings when it came to toxic backlinks.

Toxic backlinks were considered backlinks with low density (DA) Domain Authority. Or just a general website’s overall spam score, adult or gambling-related topics.

In the last few years, Google has undertaken many tasks to improve this feature, since website masters, web developers, and sometimes just simple bloggers were in fact targeted by spam websites, competitors, or even by random people trying to de-rank their websites from SERP’s and google ranks.

This became a problem!

It’s now true that the best practice is to simply ignore the disavow tool and ignore any toxic backlinks, as google simply ignores these and they have no significant rank factors anymore.

Google these days concentrates more on the website authority, social scores, and popularity, also looking into the bounce rates, and how the audience interacts with your website, website speed, core web vitals, and many other ranking factors.

In fact, using the Google Disavow tool has shown a huge drop in ranks and a huge drop in SEPR’s rankings!

Our Experiment

Back in 2020 one of our blogs had a huge density of toxic backlinks, so we decided to take a huge gamble and run an experiment test. This is where we disavowed all nudity, gambling, and spammy websites with high toxic spam scores rankings using semrush backlink tools.

Overall, there were around 150 backlinks that were disavowed, all ranking over 70 in toxicity score inside semrush algorithm (system), this was providing nothing but Red levels of toxic backlinks.

We were shocked to find out that this absolutely destroyed our traffic soon we enabled and disavowed all these 150 bad and nothing but toxic backlinks.

We also run the experiment on another website where we disavowed toxic backlinks and also had the same results, check out the image below.

As you can see above, disavowing the toxic backlinks and telling google to ignore them had a negative impact on our websites

Removing the disavowed backlinks and just leaving them alone, has a positive impact.

Conclusion and Experiment Results

After our experiment, it is certainly true that leaving the toxic backlinks and not touching them in the google search console has beneficial factors.

We have learned that toxic, spammy or “404 page not found” expired backlinks are ignored by google and have no significant ranking factors leading from 2021 and onwards.

We have also seen a huge collection of .blogspot backlinks appear in SERP’s database in the last few months and it’s only been a built-up since. Blogspot backlinks usually have a DA of “0”, yet we found out that they do not impact our website’s ranks in any shape or form.

It’s best to just ignore toxic backlinks and concentrate on EAT scores as well as web core vitals in 2022 and leading onwards.
